با تاسیس سازمان پرورش افكار و تامین بودجه لازم از سوی این سازمان به مبلغ 80 هزار تومان، در چهارم اردیبهشت ماه سال 1319 زنگ رادیو به صدا درآمد و مردم ایران برای اولین بار صدا را از رادیو سراسری دریافت كردند و از آن تاریخ به بعد رادیو همدمی همیشگی در خانه هایی شد كه هنوز هم صدای آن طنین انداز است.

در سال 1342 كل تشكیلات رادیو به وزارت اطلاعات منتقل شد، رادیو و تشكیلات آن، تا مدتی در زیر مجموعه های تشكیلاتی مختلفی تعریف شده بود از جمله انتشارات و تبلیغات، رادیو و خبرگزاری، انتشارات و رادیو، انتشارات و اطلاعات و اداره كل انتشارات و رادیو و این وضع تا سال 1350 كه سازمان رادیو تلویزیون ملی ایران شكل گرفت، ادامه داشت.

برنامه های رادیو تهران در ابتدا در زمانی هشت ساعته در قالب اخبار، موسیقی ایرانی و گفتار مذهبی، فرهنگی، جغرافیایی و تاریخی اجرا می شد. اما پس از مدتی رادیو با افزایش برنامه هایی مدون در روزهای تعطیل بر روند پیشرفت و افزایش محبوبیت خویش در میان مردم افزود.

این روند پیشرفت، با ساخت استودیویی كوچك در میدان ارگ، یك فرستنده و تغییر نام رادیو تهران به رادیو ایران به تحولی بنیادین در عرصه ارتباطی كشور تبدیل شد و از آن پس فرهنگیان ، هنرمندان و روزنامه نگاران نامی چون 'استاد محمد حجازی ملقب به مطیع الدوله(نویسنده و داستان نویس)، حسینقلی مستعان(داستان نویس)، ابوالقاسم پاینده(نویسنده)، محمد علی فروغی، دكتر قائم غنی، دكتر محمود افشار و دكتر علینقی وزیری بخش، جذب این رسانه شدند و در تولید و پخش برنامه های رادیو بسیار موفق عمل كردند.

پس از پیروزی انقلاب اسلامی، سازمان صدا و سیمای جمهوری اسلامی ایران‌ جایگزین سازمان رادیو تلویزیون ملی ایران شد و با گذشت زمان، شبكه های رادیویی بسیاری چون رادیو سراسری‌، رادیو جوان‌، رادیو تهران‌، رادیو ورزش‌، رادیو معارف‌، رادیو پیام، رادیو قرآن و رادیو فرهنگ به وجود آمد.

امروز رادیو هفتاد و دو ساله شد، علی رغم گذشت بیش از هفت دهه از عمر این رسانه، همچنان این رسانه آشنا، جوان تر از همیشه در مكان ها و زمان های مختلف مونس و همراه مردم سربلند ایران است و زمزمه ی صمیمی خود را طنین انداز خانه های گرم آنان می سازد.
