روز دوشنبه، ۲۴ دلو/بهمن ذبیح الله مجاهد، از سخنگویان طالبان در اطلاعیه ای که برای رسانه ها ارسال شده، گفته است که بر اساس اطلاعی که به خانواده ملا عبیدالله رسیده، او در روز پنجم ماه مارچ (مارس) سال ۲۰۱۰ در زندانی در شهر کراچی پاکستان درگذشته است.

پیش از این رسانه های محلی پاکستان و افغانستان خبر درگذشت او را منتشر کرده بودند، اما این خبر مورد تایید مقامات رسمی دو کشور و یا گروه طالبان قرار نگرفته بود.

ذبیح الله مجاهد در اطلاعیه ارسالی برای رسانه ها نوشته که به خانواده معاون ملا عمر گفته شده که او در اثر بیماری قلبی در زندان در گذشته و "شواهد موثقی" در باره درگذشت او ارائه شده است.

این سخنگوی گروه طالبان اما افزوده است که تا حالا مشخص نیست که ملا عبیدالله بر اثر بیماری جان داده یا این که در دوران حبس به دلیل "شکنجه و تعذیب" کشته شده است.

ملا عبیدالله در سوم جنوری (ژانویه) سال ۲۰۰۷ میلادی در ایالت بلوچستان پاکستان دستگیر شد و تا هنگام مرگ در زندان بود.

او اصلا از ولایت قندهار بود و با ملا عمر روابط نزدیکی داشت.

ملا عبیدالله با تشکیل گروه طالبان به یکی از فرماندهان ارشد این گروه تبدیل شد و در سال ۱۳۷۴ خورشیدی در جنگی در غرب افغانستان اسماعیل خان، والی وقت هرات و وزیر انرژی و آب کنونی را دستگیر کرد.

او در سال ۱۳۷۵ و پس از آن که شهر کابل به دست گروه طالبان افتاد، به عنوان وزیر دفاع این گروه تعیین شد و پس از سقوط رژیم طالبان، رهبر طالبان او را به سمت معاون خود برگزید.

پس از دستگیری این فرمانده پیشین طالبان، در ماههای نخست سال ۲۰۱۰ میلادی شماری دیگر از رهبران ارشد گروه طالبان و از جمله ملا عبدالغنی برادر فرمانده نظامی طالبان و مولوی عبدالکبیر فرد شماره سوم گروه طالبان از سوی نیروهای امنیتی پاکستان بازداشت شدند.

در آن زمان مقامهای آمریکایی بازداشت این افراد را "موفقیتی بزرگ" برای همکاری آمریکا و پاکستان خواند، اما در افغانستان بازداشت این افراد به مخالفت پاکستان با مصالحه با گروه طالبان تعبیر شد.

هر چند ملا عبیدالله سالها در زندان بود و در فعالیتهای گروه طالبان نقشی نداشت، اما انتشار خبر مرگ او در زندان می تواند از لحاظ روانی در میان ستیزه جویان طالبان پیامد منفی داشته باشد.
